“Traditional or infrared?” is the first decision in almost every sauna purchase. But “traditional” isn’t one product. It covers backyard barrels, outdoor cabins and cubes, indoor rooms, compact two-seaters, wood-fired stoves, and hybrids that add infrared panels to a stove-heated room. This guide compares each traditional type against infrared using published specs from current models, not marketing claims. (This page replaces our earlier “barrel vs infrared” guide.)
How each type heats
- Traditional: an electric or wood-burning heater warms a load of stones, and the stones heat the air. Pour water on the stones for steam. Plunge describes it as heating the air first to create “the classic hot, enveloping sauna experience.”
- Infrared: carbon or ceramic panels emit infrared that warms you more directly than the air, so the cabin runs cooler. “Full-spectrum” models add near- and mid-infrared emitters to far-infrared panels. Infrared cabins are dry heat only. Sun Home tells Equinox owners to keep water away from the wood.
Traditional vs infrared, side by side
| Factor | Traditional (all types) | Infrared |
|---|---|---|
| Max temperature (published) | 180–230°F: Almost Heaven Madison (paid link) 180°F in an hour; Plunge Sauna Mini (paid link) 210°F; SISU Eddy (paid link) 110–230°F; Sun Home Nova 3 (paid link) up to 230°F; Plunge The Sauna (paid link) 230°F | 140–175°F: Sun Home Solstice 3 (paid link) 140°F; Plunge Infrared (Standard) (paid link) 160°F; Equinox 3 (paid link) 165°F; Amplify III (paid link) 170°F; Plunge Infrared Pro (paid link) 175°F |
| Heat-up time (published examples) | SISU barrels 50–90 min depending on target and weather; Almost Heaven KIP Smart up to 194°F in 45–60 min; Madison 180°F in about an hour | SaunaBox Solara 2 (paid link) about 150°F in ~25 min (per listing) |

| Electrical (examples) | Almost always 240V. Harvia KIP 6kW 240V/30A hardwired (Almost Heaven, Redwood); 8kW 40A; Sauna Mini 220–240V/20A; Nova 3 dedicated 30A hardwired. Wood-burning: no electricity for heat | Many run on a dedicated 120V/20A (NEMA 5-20): Equinox, Solstice, Plunge Standard. Hotter or outdoor units may need 240V (Amplify III, Plunge Pro, Luminar 2 (paid link)) |

Choose traditional if…
- You want high air temperatures and steam from water on the stones.
- The sauna will live outdoors, and you’re ready for a base and a 240V circuit (or a wood stove). See our cold-climate install guide.
- You don’t mind planning ahead. Wi-Fi heaters (HUUM, MyHarvia, Plunge app) let you start the heat-up remotely.
Choose infrared if…
- You want the simplest install. Several models need only a dedicated 120V/20A outlet.
- The sauna is going indoors and you want to skip a hardwired 240V circuit.
- You prefer a lower air temperature, dry heat and a faster start.
Questions to ask before buying either
- What exactly does the circuit need? Ask for voltage, amperage, plug type (e.g., NEMA 5-20 vs L14-20) and whether it’s hardwired.
- Is the power cord included? Plunge says the Sauna Mini’s is not.
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Coverage on the models above ranges from 1 year (Redwood, Titan/SISU) to limited lifetime (Almost Heaven, Sun Home), and some is split by component.
- What’s the delivered, configured price? Heater upgrades, roof kits, floors and assembly can add hundreds to thousands of dollars.
