Choosing a model is the easy part. In a cold climate, the hard part is the site work around it: a base that won’t heave, a heavy-gauge 240V circuit run across the yard, a roof that sheds snow, and realistic winter heat-up times. This guide covers installation and planning. For model picks, see best outdoor saunas for cold winters and best barrel saunas. Everything below comes from manufacturer pages checked Oct 9, 2026. Local building, electrical and fire codes override any of it.
1. Foundation: weight first
| Model (example) | Published weight or load | Maker’s base guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Plunge Sauna Mini (paid link) | ~632 lbs; surface must support up to 1,400 lbs | Level concrete pad at least 4" thick, or a reinforced treated-lumber deck |
| Redwood Outdoors Barrel 6-Person (paid link) | 900 lbs (empty) | Ships in a wooden crate; place on a level base |
| Redwood Outdoors Extra-Wide Barrel (paid link) | 1,245 lbs (empty) | Same; heaviest barrel we’ve documented |
| Almost Heaven barrels (e.g., the Salem, sold by Select Saunas (paid link)) | Weight not listed on product page | Concrete pad 3–4" thick, or 4–6" of crushed stone, or a deck or pavers that support the full weight; level the ground first |
Remember that these weights are empty. People, stones and a wet interior add more. Plunge notes that a shifting or uneven foundation can compromise structural integrity over time. Where the ground freezes and thaws, ask a local contractor how deep the base needs to be for your frost line. We can’t give one number for every region.
Almost Heaven sells floor kits that sit inside its barrels: $459 for the Watoga size, $512 for the Salem and up to $1,118 for the Shenandoah. These are interior floors and don’t replace an exterior base.
2. Power: a dedicated 240V circuit for most heaters
| Heater / sauna | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Harvia KIP 6kW (standard in Almost Heaven and Redwood barrels) | 240V, 30A, hardwired; separate 110–120V/15A plug-in circuit for lighting (Almost Heaven) |
| Harvia KIP Wi-Fi 8kW package (paid link) | 240V; 40A breaker and #8 copper wire; Wi-Fi power unit outside the sauna within 13 ft, controller within 16.5 ft of the power unit |
| Plunge Sauna Mini (paid link) | Dedicated 220–240V, 20A, NEMA L14-20 outlet; power cord not included |
| Sun Home Luminar 2 (outdoor infrared) (paid link) | 240V, 20A dedicated circuit with GFCI protection; NEMA L6-20 |
| Harvia M3 wood-burning kit (Almost Heaven) | No electricity for heat; needs chimney clearance and fire-code compliance |
- Hire a licensed electrician. Redwood says all heaters must be installed by a certified electrician and recommends getting at least two quotes. Sun Home says its Luminar 5 (paid link) must be installed on a GFCI-protected circuit by a certified electrician or the warranty is void.
- Distance drives cost. A sauna at the back of the yard can mean a long trench and heavy wire. We haven’t verified typical prices, so get quotes before you choose the spot.
- Off-grid option: Almost Heaven’s M3 kit ($3,939) includes the stove, protective base and surround, stainless chimney sections and stones. It says wood-burning is recommended only for certain outdoor models.
3. Roof and weather protection
- Included: Plunge includes a waterproof roof with the Sauna Mini. Redwood includes shingles with its standard barrels.
- Extra: SISU’s cedar bevel roof kit is required for outdoor use: +$800 on the Eddy (paid link) and +$900 on the Edwin (paid link). Redwood’s beveled roof kit for the Extra-Wide is $699.
- Covers: Sun Home advises a weather cover for the Luminar during rain, snow and colder months. Ice Barrel voids the warranty on its indoor Amplify III (paid link) if it’s used outdoors without its cover.
4. Winter heat-up: plan for longer waits
- Titan quotes 50–90 minutes for SISU barrels, “depending on desired temperature and weather conditions.”
- Almost Heaven says its KIP Smart heater reaches up to 194°F in 45–60 minutes. It doesn’t give a winter figure.
- Sun Home says the Luminar 2 operates below 25°F, though “cold ambient air extends warm-up time.”
- Takeaway: choose Wi-Fi control (HUUM app on SISU, MyHarvia app on Harvia Wi-Fi heaters, Plunge app) so the sauna can heat while you’re still indoors. Ask the seller whether the stock heater size suits your coldest months. Almost Heaven puts the same 6kW heater in its 2-person and 4-person barrels.
5. Delivery day
- Redwood ships by curbside freight with an appointment. The Barrel 6 crate is about 85" × 45½" × 28½". Arrange help or equipment to move it from the curb.
- Ice Barrel says its sauna arrives on a pallet, can’t be carried up steps, and that a paved driveway works best.
- Snow and frozen ground make this harder. If you can, schedule delivery and assembly before the ground freezes.
6. Using it all winter
- Stones and water: Almost Heaven says to add water only once the stones reach at least 160°F, no more than one ladle (¼ cup) at a time, and to check stones yearly for settling.
- Cold plunge next to the sauna? Sun Home warns that cold-plunge filtration shouldn’t run in sub-freezing conditions and that winterization is required if the unit is exposed to freezing temperatures. See cold plunges with a chiller.
- Exterior wood: Redwood says its heat-treated hemlock needs no stain or sealer for structural integrity and will weather to gray. A water-based stain can keep the color.
