An outdoor infrared sauna has to handle rain, snow, sun and freeze-thaw, which many indoor infrared cabins aren’t built for. We compared outdoor options on size, seats, heat type, power, insulation, warranty and price, using makers’ published specs and prices on Oct 13, 2026. We haven’t tested these saunas ourselves, and this page makes no health claims.

Our top pick
Design concept: SaunaCloudSaunaCloud designs the enclosure, insulation and power for your address. It specifies R-8 to R-13 insulation by climate and plans the roof, overhangs, seals and drainage together. Its example build is 8' × 6' × 8' with a 9' × 2' front overhang, about 1,450 lb, and 12kW on a dedicated 240V/60A circuit. A cut-to-spec wood kit ships for a flat $999 with plans for your trades.
Tradeoffs: no fixed price; you supply a level, drainable base, permits, a contractor and a licensed electrician; and a 60A circuit in the example is a big electrical job. It’s infrared, so no stones or steam. The wood and red light aren’t covered by the warranty.
Traditional alternatives: barrel saunas with a set price
If you want 180°F-class air and water on the stones, a traditional barrel is simpler and has a fixed price. All four below are Almost Heaven red cedar barrels sold by Select Saunas:
- Two people, lowest price: Almost Heaven Salem (paid link), $4,176. See our Salem review.
- Two people plus a covered porch: Almost Heaven Vienna (paid link), $4,922. See our Vienna review.
- Two to four people: Almost Heaven Watoga (paid link), $4,922. See our Watoga review.
- Four people: Almost Heaven Pinnacle (paid link), $5,303. See our Pinnacle review.

How to choose an outdoor infrared sauna
- Confirm it’s rated for outdoors. An indoor cabin under a cover isn’t the same as an outdoor build with a roof, seals and drainage.
- Plan the base. You need a level, drainable pad, pavers or reinforced deck, and frost planning in cold climates.
- Get the electrical quote first. Outdoor runs, disconnects and large circuits add cost.
- Check insulation and warm-up if you have real winters. See our cold-climate guide.
FAQ
Can you put an infrared sauna outside?
Only if it’s built for outdoors. SaunaCloud designs its outdoor rooms for the site’s climate; many prefab infrared cabins are indoor-only.
Is a barrel sauna infrared?
Usually not. The Almost Heaven barrels here use traditional electric stone heaters.
